"The body keeps the score" is only half the story, and the missing half matters: a body described only as a harbinger of the past is a body people learn to avoid.

the issue that I take with some of the language around "the body keeps the score" is that it maybe doesn't also recognize that the body also carries so much wisdom and so much intelligence and kind of helps guide us towards healing

The body is not an archive of trauma: what feels like a memory stored in the hips or the jaw is a mind-body feedback loop, and the loop is what therapy interrupts.

It may not be stored there, but what you're tapping into, it's not a repository of the memory, but it's part of this mind-body feedback loop where there's a sensation that your brain has an association to that might have a familiarity to a time in which you felt sad or scared.

Somebody with trauma should try a trauma-focused therapy such as EMDR before treating their nightmares directly.

I would recommend that anyone who thinks they're suffering from trauma (eg PTSD) try a trauma-focused therapy like EMDR before trying to address nightmares directly, unless the nightmares are overwhelmingly worse than all their other trauma symptoms.

Eye movement reprocessing went from alternative to establishment, and moving your eyes while talking about a trauma does seem to help you process it.

Eye movement directed reprocessing (alternative when the book was written, now basically establishment) where you move your eyes back and forth while talking about your trauma, and this seems to somehow help you process it better.

The APA's trauma treatment guidelines should be ignored, because they rest only on trials of therapies too brief to have worked.

The American Psychological Association (APA) just issued guidelines for treating trauma. Patients and therapists would be wise to ignore them.

Childhood trauma is the template for every addiction, including the socially rewarded ones.

Childhood trauma is the template for addiction-any addiction. All addictions are attempts to escape the deep pain of the hurt child, attempts temporarily soothing but ultimately futile.

Trauma is not confined to terrible events: a child whose parents were too stressed or distracted to see them has been traumatized too.

But trauma is not restricted to horrific experiences. It refers to any set of events that, over time, impose more pain on the child than his or her sensitive organism can process and discharge.
