Therapy approaches
Named schools and methods of psychotherapy, each in the words of the people who practise or study it. These are things clinicians do, not ways of thinking, so they sit apart from the mental models, which they draw on.
-
Schema therapy
Deep, early-formed beliefs about yourself and others run quietly under adult life, and a schema is too rigid for logic alone to dislodge. Schema therapy treats them through experience and the therapy relationship, not only through argument. -
EMDR
A trauma therapy in which a person holds a memory in mind while following alternating eye movements, taps or tones. Clinicians disagree about why it works, but several agree on where it fits and how carefully it must be paced. -
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT)
Couples therapy that treats the fight as a loop driven by attachment fear, and its sibling, Leslie Greenberg's emotion-focused therapy, which works on emotion directly. Not the same as EFT tapping.
