A way into a field for someone who does not work in it.

What these pages are, and what they are not.

Each page starts with the argument: the questions the field disagrees about, the views on each and who holds them, who has changed their mind, and the ways of thinking the argument keeps reaching for. Reading many people on one question and mapping where they part is what Mortimer Adler called syntopical reading, and it is the fastest honest way into a field you do not work in.

Then the papers this archive draws on in that field and puts them in the order they were written, with a plain-language note on each. The order is the date and nothing else: ranking research is not something this site has any standing to do, and for a learner the field's own sequence is the better answer anyway, because each paper is usually answering something the one before it left open. These are not surveys and they are not complete — they are the papers that happen to be here, which is a handful, chosen because somebody on this site has said something about them.
