However capable AI coding tools become, the industry will still need junior programmers, because someone must be able to vet what the machine produces.

Entry-level white-collar work is where junior programmers are hired. If half of it goes within five years, the industry is not simultaneously still hiring the juniors who become the seniors.

Most current predictions about AI's imminent impact on the job market are naive.

Karpathy’s claim is second-order: it is about forecasts like this one, and it calls them naive. Amodei’s one-to-five-year displacement forecast is squarely the genre under attack, so the two men cannot both be reading the evidence correctly.
