Smith predicts humans will always have jobs keeping AI agents on track. Amodei’s argument is that AI matches the general cognitive profile of humans, so it reaches the new jobs too — and supervising an agent is itself cognitive work of exactly the kind he says is not protected. The word "always" is what makes these incompatible rather than merely differently timed.
Cannot both be true
Altman’s consolation is that new kinds of work appear as old ones go. Amodei’s point is that AI reaches the new work too, because it matches the general human cognitive profile rather than a fixed list of tasks. These are opposite answers to the same question.
