I think hydrogen is a hyped-up bandwagon. I’ll be delighted to be proved wrong, but I don’t see how hydrogen is going to help us with our energy problems.

MacKay called hydrogen a hyped-up bandwagon unlikely to help with our energy problems. Handmer says he is 100% confident that hydrogen made straight from raw solar power will be the cheapest chemical energy available anywhere by the end of this decade, and has built a company on it. The disagreement is total, and the mechanism Handmer names — solar cheap enough to run a deliberately inefficient electrolyser — did not exist when MacKay wrote.
